Review the assessment criteria and point system that Service Canada uses to assess applications. Does your application meet the following?
Determine whether your proposed position is non-union or union. If you are unsure, consult with your Human Resources advisor to assess whether the proposed scope of duties falls within the BCGEU Collective Agreement bargaining units.
If your position is union, answer "yes" to question number 7 on the application form. If your position is non-union, answer "no." Service Canada requires a union concurrence letter for union positions. The University will seek to acquire union approval and submit it to Service Canada on your behalf.
Complete the online or paper application form. Once completed, save or print out a copy before submitting it to Service Canada. After you submit your application, you will receive a confirmation number.
You will need the following UBC-specific information to complete the form:
Submit your application to Service Canada directly (at this point without the union concurrence letter) before the February 2
Forward a copy of your application to the On Campus Student Employment Program Coordinator, Deanna Simmons so we are aware of your request for funding and can submit your position description to Human Resources and the union for approval on your behalf. Forward the copy, along with the confirmation number, to Deanna Simmons, On Campus Student Employment Program Coordinator. Clearly indicate if your position is union or non-union.
Getting approval from Human Resources and the unions generally takes one to two weeks. You will then require additional time for Service Canada approval.
If you don't have a student in mind for your position, advertise the position on the employer portal on CareerConnect. UBC employers can post their jobs for free. Make sure your posting:
Appoint your student (on an hourly basis) by submitting an eform to UBC Payroll.
Ensure your student gets paid by submitting timesheets. Keep accurate and detailed copies of these timesheets because you will need to provide them to Service Canada when you submit your claim
Pay your student's full wage first.
Submit your claim form (sent to you by Service Canada).
You'll then receive a cheque from Service Canada for your wage subsidy.
Attached to your claim form, you
If you or your student do not meet all of the eligibility criteria or position conditions outlined on the Canada Summer Jobs website, Service Canada will not process your wage subsidy cheque.
