Fresh from the Market

What does fresh food look like? Taste like? Feel like? These are some questions Véronik Campbell, academic programs manager at the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm, frequently asks people to think about.

“I ask people to close their eyes and think about their morning breakfast,” explains Campbell. “Keep your eyes closed. Do you remember where you bought it? Who handed it to you? Whose hands it touched? Was it in a package on a shelf? Did it come in a truck or a boat? Can you imagine what the farmers look like? Their hands? The colour of the soil?”

This awareness is a beginning to better understanding — and caring for — our precious food system. Tonight, when you sit down to dinner, take a moment to imagine the paths taken by the food before you.

Want to eat more local, farm fresh food? Shop at your local farmers’ market. From the beginning of June to the end of October, visit UBC Farm markets on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or drop by Tuesday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Savour your food, eat local and enjoy healthy, fresh food this summer!
